The first session of ‘Wednesdays at CGC’ meetings, took place at CGC Centro de Genética Clínica Lisbon facilities, in last March 25th. The purpose of these meetings is to promote scientific discussion, between physicians and geneticists, about themes of interest to the medical community.
In the first session, the lectures focused on:
1) ‘HPV Infection’, Eufémia Ribeiro, MD
Eufémia Ribeiro, MD spoke about association between HPV infection and cervical cancer, focusing on the clinical correlation looking at statistics. Current infection detection methods and the importance and applicability of vaccination and clinical advantages of the recent HPV typing methods were also explored in this lecture.
2) ‘Placentar abnormalities’, Rosete Nogueira MD
Rosete Nogueira, MD described the major pathologies associated with spontaneous fetal loss, including main placentar disorders, chromosomopathies and infections. The diagnostic procedures used by CGC Anatomic Pathology Laboratory were also presented.
3) ‘Prenatal Screening’, Purificação Tavares, MD, PhD
Purificação Tavares, MD, PhD explained the complete set of set of processes that comprise Prenatal Screening, describing each of the biochemical markers and risk assessment procedures. Advantages of a Prenatal Screening program in the improvement of fetal-maternal health and the methodologies for its application before the 9th pregnancy week were also analysed.
CGC appreciates lecturers’ availability and the participation of all the people present at this meeting, which contributed to a comprehensive and fruitful debate.
